So, I just get back and I'm deleting shit stories that have been piling up on this brand new account that I made. I'm bored as hell, but I'm looking through Wikia Activity and I come across none other than this thread.
Not gonna lie, Maddie's Little Baby, one of the deleted stories, was mine. It was written about 3 years ago when I first starting writing for here. I'm also not gonna lie when I say that it went too far in that direction and it's not the first time I did it (There was another gorefic, a bit more violent and rapey, before we learned about the guidelines. It was a Phineas and Ferb fanfic I wrote out of boredom.) Maddie's Little Baby, at that point, was either forgotten about, or I just looked over it and didn't think too much into the subject.
But that said, let's get into the meat of this thread.
Sannse wrote: Hi, I've just deleted "Lil Miss Rarity" and "Maddie's Little Baby" because of their sadomasochist content. I realize that horror is part of this wiki, but extreme gore and violence, especially when there is a sexual element, goes too far for Wikia.
I see that you have other pages marked NSFW. Please can an admin look at these and remove any that contain torture porn or other extreme content.
What gets me here is the use of "extreme." It's a rather subjective term, as has been discussed before, back in 2013 iirc. It bodes the question: Should we have regulations on site for NSFW works? Should NSFW stories be allowed? Should the ones we have be deleted even if they're only lightly NSFW?
Personally, I don't think they should be deleted on the basis of light NSFW. I'm a very anti-censorship person, particularly nowadays, and to start deleting works based on content alone kills the entire point of sites like this. It goes down a slippery slope about what can be found offensive or not. Is there a line of objectivity? Is the mere mention of a fetish NSFW or too far, or do you have to go into as much detail as I did with Maddie's Little Baby? Was my story the maximum extreme, or the minimum? I think I'll examine the quality of what we have and make my judgments based on quality for now, but I'm wondering: Should we have guidelines? If so, what should they be? If not, why not?
'Tis an objectively touchy subject indeed. NSFW works tend to be gorefics as is, and usually get deleted (on CPW, anyhow, hardly anyone is active here,) but of those few diamonds in the rough, is it worth not preserving them based on what's found offensive? Obviously, we have to follow Staff here, but where is the line to be drawn objectively? Discuss.
I never read those two so I don't know exactly what their content was like. Really, how gruesome a story is depends more on how it's written than the content itself, though. It's when a story focuses too much on gore and details relating to gore that it becomes gratuitous, and to be honest, it doesn't make for a good story any more than jump scares make a good horror game. Too much focus on violence and blood is something we've always discouraged on both wikis.
I don't think we need a specific line, since there isn't really one that can be drawn for what is and isn't tasteful. Again, the guideline against gratuitous violence has always been in place. It's just up to us as admins to use our judgement on whether or not violence is used in a way that works for the story, or if it's just there for its own sake.
